  • ABOUT SIMRAN:

Simran Sethi is the founder of the Asian Psychedelic Collective, drawing on her extensive background in journalism, academia, and service as a birth doula and yoga teacher. She is committed to expanding the dominant narratives around psychedelics: honoring the indigenous lineages that have stewarded earth medicines and inspired synthetic analogues, uplifting explorations into altered states (including meditation and breathwork) and entheogens that are part of Asian culture, and destigmatizing mental health and drug use within Asian communities. These medicines—and the healing, joy, and connection they can engender—are our birthright.

Simran came to psychedelics through her own experiences with psilocybin and MDMA for severe depression and anxiety. She is a member of the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team at the American Psychedelic Practitioners Association that has reviewed, informed, and edited Psychedelic Practitioner Guidelines; was part of the inaugural equity cohort at Fireside Project, providing free and confidential peer support to those actively working with a psychedelic or integrating a past psychedelic experience; and is a 2023 Ferriss-UC Berkeley Psychedelic Journalism Fellow.

Simran is a proud South Asian immigrant to the United States—the daughter of parents born in Pakistan and Uganda and raised in India. She is currently completing an Msc. in applied positive psychology and coaching psychology at the University of East London with a focus on psychedelic integration and culturally attuned care. Her goal is to build on her background and recent training as an end-of-life doula to support immigrants and elders in psychedelic support and integration. "

  • ABOUT THIS TALK:

Diaspora and other downstream consequences of diaspora lead to increased levels of stress, which causes higher levels of inflammation in the brain and body that combine with the many other pro-inflammatory factors in our modern lives like diet, exercise, and information/sensory overload. Psychedelics have been shown to have novel mechanisms of anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, natural medicines display much greater chemodiversity not seen in pharmaceuticals that can have unique pharmacological potential. Our co-evolution with our medicines has been a physical, spiritual, and biochemical.

    ABOUT MIYABE:

Dr. Miyabe Shields, PhD is a queer, neurodivergent, stoner scientist and an avid psychonaut. After cannabis positively changed their ability to relate to others at the age of 15, Miyabe dedicated their life to understanding the inner workings of the neurodivergent brain on drugs. Miyabe went from academic research in pharmaceutical sciences specializing in drug discovery in the endocannabinoid system to rare extract and formulation research in the cannabis industry, embracing the thrill of pushing scientific boundaries. But due to other boundaries, Miyabe grew to be incompatible with both academic and industrial research settings. Now a beginner farmer immersing themself in urban agriculture as a community health initiative, Miyabe hopes to facilitate change through creating authentic, accessible scientific education content, protocols, and experiences that lower barriers to health equity.

  • ABOUT THIS TALK

Entheogenic medicines are inherently radical transformative healing allies from Mother Nature. We could also see these 'spirit' molecules as change agents, not only due to their ability to radicalise our individual wellbeing, but also due to their potential to enable the ontological shifts required to activate the spiritual activists within us.

Decolonizing psychedelics encourages us to broaden our aperture beyond the dominant hierarchical Eurocentric narratives of what it means to heal with these substances by inviting us to simultaneously consider the historic legacies of harm that have shaped our ailing culture. We are asked to spotlight the oppressive structural systems contributing to cycles of collective trauma and perpetuating the escalating number of mental health afflictions hindering us today.

In this presentation you will be challenged to consider the impact of growing issues such as cultural appropriation, the lack of recognition of the spiritual/sacred positioning of these medicines, accessibility, representation as well as the historic suppression of indigenous entheogenic traditions and the continued mass incarceration of people of colour due to the on-going war on drugs.

We will question what it means to heal amidst a profoundly sick society and more so question how we can answer the call to utilise the boundary dissolving effects of psychedelic experiences to shift from our individualised models of healing to building interdependent relational models for collective care.
